How to pack fragile items, TVs, mattresses and clothes

These general packing tips cover the items most likely to break, bend or get dirty during a move.

Dishes and glassware

Wrap each piece in paper, stand plates on edge and fill gaps so nothing rattles. Use small boxes so they stay light enough to lift.

Mirrors and framed art

Add corner protectors, wrap them in padding and move them upright, never flat. Mark the box as glass on every side.

TVs

Wrap the screen in a blanket, keep the TV upright and tape the bagged screws and remote to the back. If it was on the wall, add TV mounting at the new home.

Mattresses

Seal each mattress in a plastic mattress bag to keep out dust and humidity. Do not fold one unless the maker says it can bend.

Hanging clothes

Leave clothes on their hangers and pull a trash bag over each bundle, or use wardrobe boxes. It saves hours of folding and ironing.

Electronics and cables

Photograph the back of each device before unplugging it, then coil and bag the cables with the device they belong to.

Box basics

Put heavy items in small boxes and light items in large ones. Tape every bottom twice and label each box with its room.

What affects packing time

Packing time depends more on how much you own than on the size of your home. These are the main drivers.

Amount of belongings

High impact

Full closets, cabinets and garages take much longer than lightly furnished rooms of the same size.

Number of fragile items

High impact

Glassware, china, art and collectibles each need their own wrapping, which adds time quickly.

How much you pack yourself

High impact

Packing the easy rooms on your own leaves only the harder ones for the crew.

Furniture that needs wrapping

Medium impact

Large sofas, glass tables and dressers need padding before they can be loaded.

Access at your home

Medium impact

Stairs, elevator reservations and a long walk to the truck slow loading once packing is done.

Decisions still to make

Low impact

Rooms where you have not yet sorted what stays and what goes take longer to pack.

What to pack yourself vs what to leave to movers

Keep anything private or irreplaceable with you, and hand off what is heavy, bulky or awkward to wrap.

Pack and carry yourself

  • Jewelry, cash and small valuables
  • Passports, birth certificates and other important papers
  • Medications and anything you need every day
  • Laptops, hard drives and phones with your data
  • Family photos and keepsakes you cannot replace
  • An open-first box for your first night

Leave to the movers

  • Sofas, dressers, bed frames and other heavy furniture
  • Furniture wrapping and padding
  • Large mirrors, glass tabletops and framed art
  • Appliances and other bulky items
  • Mattresses and box springs
  • Loading the truck so nothing shifts

Florida packing tips for heat, humidity and summer storms

Florida weather changes how you should pack. A closed moving truck in an Orlando summer gets much hotter than the air outside, so heat-sensitive items should ride with you in an air-conditioned car.

  • Carry candles, crayons and cosmetics yourself, since they can soften or melt in a hot truck.
  • Keep medicines with you; many should be stored at room temperature.
  • Move vinyl records upright in your car, because heat can warp them.
  • Bring laptops and small electronics in the car, and let larger electronics reach room temperature before you turn them on.
  • Use fresh, sturdy boxes. Humidity softens cardboard, so skip boxes that sat in a garage or got damp.
  • Pack documents and photos you never want damp in sealed plastic bins.
Plan around summer storms

From June to September, afternoon thunderstorms are common in Central Florida, so aim to load in the morning and keep plastic wrap or tarps nearby. During hurricane season, June 1 to November 30, keep a backup move date in mind.

Packing help works with any move we handle. Packing is part of local moving within Central Florida, and basic packing support is available on request for same-day moving, with availability confirmed at booking.

For long-distance and interstate moving, careful packing and tight loading matter even more, because your belongings spend more hours on the road.

Questions about packing and loading

Can’t find your answer? Call or email and you’ll get a straight answer from our team. More answers are on our FAQ page.

Do you bring boxes and packing materials?

Basic packing materials are available on request. Tell us what you need when you ask for your quote so it is part of the plan.

Can you load a rental truck that I drive myself?

Yes. We offer loading-only and unloading-only help for customers with their own truck, and we load it so nothing shifts in transit.

Should I empty my dresser drawers before the movers come?

Remove anything fragile, valuable, heavy or liquid. Whether light clothing can stay in a drawer depends on the piece, so ask when you book.

Can you pack on the same day as my move?

It depends on crew availability. Same-day moves include basic packing support on request, and we confirm availability when you book.

Are my belongings protected while you pack and load?

Yes. All moves include insured protection, and we protect floors, walls and doorways before anything is carried out.

How should I label moving boxes?

Write the destination room and a short list of contents on the top and on at least 1 side. Mark fragile boxes clearly and number boxes that belong together.
